Yankees playoff roster set

The Yankees ALDS roster is set.

From Yankees.com. “New York will take seven infielders (Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Cairo and Phillips), two catchers (Jorge Posada and Sal Fasano) and five outfielders (Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Bernie Williams and Melky Cabrera).
The 11 pitchers will be Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, Randy Johnson, Jaret Wright, Cory Lidle, Ron Villone, Bruney, Mike Myers, Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth and Mariano Rivera.”

No major surpises.  Torre was quoted as saying “We felt Phillips gave us the defense at first base,” Torre said. “Plus, in the event we want to use Cairo as a pinch-runner, we have a backup infielder who can play third, second or first.”  That was my hunch all along.  Wilson did not show enough the last couple months to warrant a roster spot.  He cannot hit a curve ball.

The article also says if Johnson cannot go, Karstens, Rasner or Henn will be added to the roster.  The Yankees need Johnson for the playoffs.  Even at 43, he is an intimidating force on the mound.  But if he is not 100%, he should not go out there.  Remember Kevin Brown, game 7, 2004 ALCS.  He should have never started that game.

I am a little worried about Bruney and his control.  8 IP, 9 BB his last 7 appearances.  In playoff games against good teams, he has to get guys out.  He has the stuff to dominate, ala Mo in 96 but he needs to throw strikes.
