51 million reasons
The Red Sox just 51 million reasons a Red Sox fan cannot say the Yankees spend wildly or buy players. 51 million just to negotiate with a guy that has never thrown a pitch in the majors???? If they sign him for 4 years 48 million that is just about 25 million a year for a guy who plays once every 5 days. Have the Sox lost their minds???? His numbers were good in Japan but are there really any good hitters left in Japan? Matsui is gone, Suzuki is gone. At least A-rod had success in the majors when he signed that ridiculous contract but Matz, he has done nothing. Can you say Hideki Irabu??? I have read the guy has “great” stuff. If I had a dollar for every pitcher that had great stuff but was not a great pitcher, I would have a good chunk of money for retirement. For 25 million a year the guy better go 28-4 with a 2.00 era or he will not be worth the money. How will the Sox fans react if he is 4-3 with a 3.90 era after his first 11 starts?? Will he be scrutinized as much as A-rod?
It should be interesting. If anything, a Sox fan cannot say anything about the Yanks payroll. 51.1 million just to negotiate with a guy. Crazy. I am glad the Yanks didn’t win the bid because they can use that money to build a team, not buy a guy that will play in only 33-35 games and cost 20-25 million a year.
