Spring Training
Not too much going on in the Yankees ST camp. Abreu hopefully will be back in a week or so which gives him about 30-40 AB’s to get ready for April 2nd.
Phillips has had a tough break this year with his mom’s accident. Joe will give him a chance to win the right handed 1B job but Phelps has the upper hand right now. It is still early so anything can happen. My hunch is they go with Phelps because he also has OF experience. I cannot see the Yankees carrying only 4 guys that can play the OF. Does Cairo play any OF? I think he has in the past but on a very limited basis. I think he played LF last year a little after Matsui got hurt.
Igawa has looked a little shaky and hopefully he will settle into the #4/5 spot in the rotation. If Pavano is healthy is he the #4 starter or do you trade him and give the spot to Rasner or Kartsens? I am torn on this one. I think a lot depends on what you can get back. The Braves may be desperate so maybe we can pry away Salty.
